Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, holding that there is no longer a constitutional right to abortion in the United States. Moving forward, abortion rights will be determined at the state level. Abortion will now be illegal in almost half of the states.

Apple store workers vote to form first US union

An Apple store in Maryland has voted to unionize, making it the first Apple store in the U.S. to form a union. Other stores have begun moving toward unionizing.

The rise in book bans, explained

Book bans have been on the rise in the United States. Jonathan Friedman, director of free expression and education at advocacy group PEN states that the situation is “unprecedented in its scale, and in the proliferation of organized groups who are trying to remove whole lists of books at once in multiple school districts, across a growing number of states.”

Nicaraguan Political Prisoners Held in 'Horrific Conditions,' Says Lawyer

More than 180 political prisoners in Nicaragua are enduring “the worst kinds of human rights abuses,” according to their lawyer. Those incarcerated have been subject to starvation conditions and bright lights or total darkness 24/7, in addition to other inhuman conditions.

UN body to hold urgent debate on Afghan women, girls’ rights

The UN’s top human rights body will hold a debate the last week of June to discuss the rollback of women and girl’s rights in Afghanistan. The erosion began nearly a year ago, when the Taliban regained control of the country.
