The League of Arab States* adopted the Arab Charter on Human Rights in May 2004.  It affirms many of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; however, there have been many critics of the document, including the United Nations.  Many critics state that the charter does not push far enough to secure rights for women and non-citizens and allows for children to be subject to the death penalty.
